 Daughter of freedom fighter Promileswar Banerjee, Mamata’s first brush with politics was in Calcutta University, where she was a part of ‘West Bengal Chhatra Parishad’ the student wing of the Indian National Congress. A part of the INC as a young woman, she quickly became a strong contender within the party, beating veteran politician Somnath Chatterjee in 1984. In 1997 she formed the All India Trinamool Congress. An effective railway minister, she fulfilled many of her promises in 2000, when she presented her first railway budget.The government in West Bengal acquired land for car and chemicals industries, which was against the interests of the farmers. Taking up the issues of small farmers, Ms Banerjee became a cheerleader of Bengal’s rural poor. She is also a strong supporter for the Women’s Reservation Bill., which provides reservation for women at each level of legislative decision-making, starting with the Lok Sabha, down to state and local legislatures.
