Daughter of prominent Dalit leader, Babu Jagjivan Ram and freedom fighter, Indrani Devi, Meira Kumar first entered politics in 1985, where she was elected from Bijnor, trouncing veteran leaders. This five time MP has become the first Woman Speaker of the Lok Sabha.The INC’s Dalit face, she has actively participated in movements related to social reforms, human rights and democracy. She launched a Family Adoption Scheme under which drought-affected families were adopted by affluent families. Committed to human rights and abolition of caste system, Ms. Kumar has visited every place where atrocities were committed against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes during the last 20 years and held meetings/ demonstrations, courted arrest and filed Public Interest Litigation cases in Supreme Court to ensure justice to them.
